Azad Armenia refers to The Republic of Armenia as an independant country after the political issues with Turkey in 1915-1991.
Diaspora is derived from ancient Greek, meaning a scattering or sowing. The word refers to a population of the same ethnicity living in a country, separate from their motherland. For instance, the Armenian Diaspora is a very broad one, as Armenian people were forced out of their country during the Ottoman Empire Genocidal invasion.
1- Asbarez
Asbarez armenian news. (2010). Retrieved from http://asbarez.com/
Asbarez is a Newspaper which is an official publication of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Western United States Central Committee. It is an interesting website as it covers cultural, political, economical, and social news of the Armenian Diaspora in the US, internationally, as well as news from Armenia itself. It also has the option of choosing languages, between English and Armenian which is an advantage to me. The website also includes videos, photos, and columns which create some interest in the news. There is also an entire section dedicated to Armenian Arts and Culture which include news about Armenian musicians, festivals (such as film festival), comedians, books, galas, and much more.

The announcements, news, and events in this website are about the Armenian Community in Cyprus, The Diaspora, Armenia, and Karabagh. The website also has a page called "Article of the month", which usually has a topic that interests me. Also, there is a forum where many people subscribe in to post their opinions and views freely ( freedom of speech).
3- Azad Hye
Middle east armenian portal. (2003-2009). Retrieved from http://www.azad-hye.net/index.htm
Azad Hye is an armenian portal based in the Middle East. It was founded by an Armenian man living in Sharjah, U.A.E, named Hrach Kalsahakian. This website includes information on Armenians living in U.A.E, Kuwait, Bahrain, Bulgaria, Ethiopia, Sudan, Turkey, Greece, and many more. The portal also has an online radio, 24/7, which plays different genres of Armenian songs. In addition, the website includes news, announcements, and events. There is also an option to translate the website into Arabic, for arab readers. There is also a monthly newsletter produced about all sorts of information in the Armenian Diaspora.
The fact that Armenia had its independent not a long time ago because of the political conflicts, for me, I find it really interesting how they were able to overcome all of these things and create their own online cultural communities in Armenia and outside Armenia. From the websites here, I can see how important for them to show their arts and cultures beside their political issues, which I think it helps in showing the real identity of Armenians. And to be honest I never heard of Armenia before I met you TALAR :D. Good Job

It is very good of you that you related everything in your post to the Armenian culture. Even the meaning of the word Diaspora you related it to Armenia which is very different than everyone else. I like your first site as it is interesting that you have a site to know what is happening around in your country. Your post is perfect but the only thing missing is a site that talks about the Armenian history as a lot of people are not familiar with the country. And by the way, you included such a beautiful picture but don't forget to cite it ;)

So the first thing I did was look for Talars post, since I've always found her culture pretty interesting. I like the links you have chosen, they are clear and informative. I mainly like and enjoy the fact that Arts is such an important part of the culture, that it happens to be mentioned whenever the opportunity is given. Whether its spoken about in an article, magazine, or simply shown by their music. It is obvious that Armenia has had its share of problematic issues yet it continues to reveal optimism by its love for their Arts and Culture.

Talar,
ReplyDeleteThe first website is a very good source for finding out information about Armenia, I like how it covers serious issues such as politics, culture, economics. But at the same time, it also provides an entertaining section telling us about the musicians, festivals, and comedians. I found the idea of having a 24-7 radio on the website very creative.

I find your third website quite appealing because it relates to most of us living in the Middle East. The fact that it was founded by Hrach Kalsahakian; it inspires many of us to start a website about our Diaspora. It encourages a lot of us to step out and connect with others from our native land. I find that quite motivating.
