Nawar Al Akawi - Syrian Diaspora

Diaspora:

Diaspora is referred to any group migration or movement from a home country to another country. For instance, Syrians living in UAE are part of the Syrian Diaspora in UAE. Syrians living in Argentina are part of the Syrian Diaspora in Argentina, and so on.

 - This is an article by Zev Chaftes of The New York Times Magazine about the Jewish Syrian Community in Brooklyn; summing up to 75000 Syrians. They call themselves the Ess-Why,
a self-created entrepreneurial and mercantile empire, many of which live in multimillionaire mansions. This article talks about their initial start in New York as normal city people, and they started opening stores in Manhattan; eventually becoming successful entrepreneurs.

- This page I found was particularly interesting because it is a blog of a Syrian girl in London entitled " Syrian in London : Snapshot from a Syrian girl's daily life in The City " . She has many interesting and creative thoughts about the new era of Facebook and online communities, War in Gaza, and freedom of choice and speech. The blog does not give much valuable information about the rest of the Syrian "Community" in London, but we do have an individual's perspective which gives us a small idea about the rest of the community, despite the fact that she has only 6 followers.

- This article is about a visit of the Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad to the Syrian Communities in Argentina and South America. Even though there is no direct information about the Syrian community and their accomplishments in Argentina, the article quotes : "noting that the Syrian community was particularly successful in South America and Argentina, managing to earn the real amity of the country's people. " Furthermore, it was pointed out that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad was well known in the area due to the scatter of the syrian communities around town.

  1. Nawar, it's really interesting how you approached your Diaspora. The first article is nice as it shows the large number of Syrian Jews who live in New York and their contributions in Manhattan. I like the Syrian girl's blog as it is a personal opinion about online communities and political aspects. The third website is quite interesting too as it is good to know that the Syrian Diaspora in Argentina and South America is pretty broad.
