Sarah Al Shaybani - Iraqi Diaspora

The term "diaspora":

Diaspora is the scattering of people, cultures, and languages. It is the spreading of something that was originally localized.

In my research, I mostly came across charity organizations located outside Iraq but are devoted to Iraqi citizens. Two of the sites that I have chosen are related to such matters. But the third one is a blog which includes articles, news, and thoughts created and submitted by Iraqis.

Iraqi Association. Web. 15 Oct. 2010. <http://www.iraqiassociation.org/index.html>.

It also is in contact with the media and the press in order to have clear up to date movements that are relevant to their clients and members.
The association’s goals and missions is to help Iraqis settle down and feel acquainted to their surrounding in the United Kingdom, and they are as well as responsible for holding many charity events. In addition, they aim to help Iraqis integrate in the United Kingdom with rights to express their cultural identities.

  1. Commenting on the Iraqi association website, I say that Internet seems to me a much freer medium that all other media like the newspaper, books, and TV cannot follow its development speed. All other media usually pass through complex regulations of distributing companies and law makers, filtered or watched by regulators too. Internet is giving the chance for communities to gather up and I see that the powerful effect that this has on societies may change the internet into a battle field or even make it change the whole world. It gives people of the same views the chance to connect and gather up to do and say what they would not have been able to do or say.

  2. Firstly I found it interesting how you posted two different websites which however address the iraqi diaspora but still address two different aspects of it. For example in the first website discusses a Iraqi association located in the UK while the second one focuses on Iraqi women and their needs.

I do however like the second post the most because it is becoming more and more of a heated topic in the recent times; and it interests me greatly to stay informed on news that influences women. Women should be able to speak out and defend themselves and have opinions of their own for we are not lesser human beings but we are just as equal as men!

    Thanks love!

  3. I think the second website that you chose is astounding because as I picked websites that related to my Diaspora in general, you opted for a rather specific one. I believe it is obligatory for such websites to help women all around the world. It is quite astonishing that such an issue is not addressed in many countries. For instance, I believe when I was researching I didn’t come across any website that covered any social issue for that matter. I hope we can use this medium to create awareness concerning such issues.

  4. First, I have to say its pretty cool how we both ended up with the same website 'Iraqi Association'.
Being that you and I are both Iraqi, and although (thankfully) we have not experienced such unfortunate events as many of our people have, it still is comforting to know that such an organization takes place in Europe. It is understandable that charity and communities would start up in the Middle East to try and help neighborhood countries, but in England? or countries that have famously been known for their views of Eurocentrism.. this inspires me, care does exist, help is offered, and some of our people Do have a place to go.
